Drawing Work

  1. Drawing as a verb? When we first set this I had no idea what to do, all I know is that I don’t want to do traditional drawing because for me and for my character the thought of doing drawing that relies on being still and delicate drives me crazy. My drawings need to be loud, big and rely on the materials. Materials in process in both my drawing and main practice have to be prominent, as I find it exiting the idea of the unknown. To begin with I had no idea what to do so I sat in my wheel chair feeling bored and uninspired when I realized that just by moving around on the chair I was creating line/pattern. These lines that seemed fragile but at the same time somehow a depiction of my boredom. With this in mind I used paper and charcoal and repeated the process. The drawing is in itself exploring spontaneity and that loss of control, but at the same time exposes the medium of charcoal it shows the strengths – being the durability, an organic result and its capability to float upon the surface of the paper through its soft weight. One of its best and worst traits was its duration, as soon as I moved the paper this exiting piece would seas to exist, which almost became the point the origins of this drawing was conjured through boredom so it felt fitting that its demise was through the ending of my boredom (in that I had beaten the boredom in making it). What is interesting about this piece is the way this soft textured substance, that in presence is tranquil and in part malleable that has a solidity to it, I feel it appears empathetically to my emotional/physical state when creating it.
