finished and installed manipulated sink

finished and installed manipulated sink

finished and installed manipulated sink

I thought that it was time to move away from the radiator cause I felt I was exhausting it. There is no real reason as to why kitchen sinks. I felt it would be an interesting piece to cast and I could see the potential in the manipulation of the draining board. There is something fragile in a kitchen sink, its function and the stay clean and mundanity quality it projects. I think what I have done is add personality to an object otherwise ignored and boring. The truth is I don’t know why? Why not? As a result in my plaster sink it almost looks like it could be sellable working sink – the way I have manipulated the draining board looks like it would hold cups, plates etc. well. My work seems to be taking on the concept of that the materials and manipulation I am using disagree with the object its creating. Plaster sink; plaster when exposed to water erodes, it also has been constructed to defy the drainage system that is the draining board, there is this loss of functionality but this quality through aesthetics that make it appear like it could be sold? Its becoming equally important for me to research dictionary definitions of my objects to be able to disregard there use.

Shelling prepared

Shelling prepared

Shelling prepared

This is all of the shelling prepped and ready to be burnout! unfortunately my shelling took much longer and was much more awkward because of the weight and the thickness. To overcome the weight of my head it took two people, one to hold and one to coat. To overcome the thickness I had to do 10 coats of shell rather than the standard 8 because otherwise there could be a risk that when the bronze is poured the mass of heat in that space could crack the shell.

Concrete Bath tub installation

Concrete Bath tub installation

Concrete Bath tub installation

Despite making my rules I have already slightly slipped from it. I have been work simultaneously, always trying to keep two piece on the go at once. On Friday I claimed a bathtub from the skip. Being too big to cast I wanted to give the impression that it had been (so It still appears to have followed my rules) but even covering the tub in cement had its complications. For the cement to bond I had to drill masses of holes into the fiberglass so it would have grip. The intention in terms of the loss of function was to use more sand so the finished result wouldn’t be clear and smooth like my sink but rather jagged and sharp, defying the function in that you could never sit and relax in this. The implication of cement as a medium created the opposite feelings of perception towards it, it made you feel cold, uncomfortable and certainly not relaxed. The main reason I felt driven with this piece is to expose the architecture of the shape, there is something interesting in the form of this piece. This in line with my previous works all share this characteristic of mockery against our cultures development, by this I mean cement is used more than often in a way to enhance our way of living, buildings, structure etc. and it is used to destroy that very enhancement through its own presence, here showing the irony. The finished piece Was installed within the sculpture communal space where it just needed to be filled with water, the water almost acting as a tease that this appears functional but when up close and engaged with the surface of the tub then hits the realization that its sharp and cold. The presence of a past experiment with casting a radiator in concrete felt appropriate to try and se more of a scene into a bathroom, it also co exists with the water in the mockery as it also sets a ironic (no existent) tone of comfort and warmth

Work being prepared for bronze pouring

Work being prepared for bronze pouring

Work being prepared for bronze pouring

Antique african head cast from a run down cracked original. This has taken almost three weeks to restore, in particular work was done to the face (creating a much smoother finish and ironing out cracks from mould). A brand new base has been constructed with defined detail that corresponds to the design as a whole. This will be one of many pieces being shelled and poured by next friday. Finished patterning will be either tradition black, or burnout finished.

I have been rev…

I have been reviewing all of my work and they all follow same systems or rather rules so I have sentenced these to follow as rules. there are three rules to my conceptual thinking in my work.

one is the loss of function through the manipulation and materials

two is the materials in which i use must be a widely used industrial material

three is the act of casting from the original must happen

my work has developed keeping in line with this idea of the audience being the target to encounter the work, and for the work to disrupt this normality and interaction with those objects. But I wouldn’t say that there is an emphasis on the audiences encounter with my work now, it is more about the objects themselves. I think I am not beginning to discover what it is i love about casting and creating my work, i have tried breaking down as to why I cast the objects i do but the bottom line is i don’t know, and part of me feels like I never will. all i know is that its important for them to be objects we encounter regularly.
